What to Expect With Dental Implants
If you have missing teeth, dental implants are great solutions! We recommend dental implants as they are a permanent solution for missing teeth. Dental implants look and function like your traditional teeth, making it easier to maintain the tooth and ensuring you will have a smile you love to share.
What to Expect
Your initial visit will involve x-rays and the planning process for dental implants. We will work closely with you to ensure the dental implant process is fully understood prior to scheduling your appointment. Certain patients may need to undergo bone grafting prior to dental implants to ensure the bone is strong enough to hold the implant.
The dental implant must be surgically placed in the jawbone if it is going to last. The titanium screw will bond with the jawbone, acting as the anchor for the new prosthetic tooth to be attached. The titanium can take six months or longer to effectively bond with the jawbone. We do recommend having patients come back for a follow up examination with Dr. Jenson in Brigham City to make sure everything looks great and it’s bonding properly.
Following the initial surgery, patients will have time for the area to heal prior to an abutment placed on the implant. The abutment will be placed on top of the gums and is attached to the implant, and is responsible for holding the artificial tooth in place.
Caring for Dental Implants
A dental implant will need regular brushing and flossing to keep the area healthy. The jawbone can be vulnerable to decay if you do end up with serious gum disease that ends up requiring advanced periodontal treatment. Daily brushing and flossing normally prevent this issue from occurring. We do recommend mouthwash to aid in cleansing the mouth from bacteria that does increase the risk of dental decay.
