A dental crown refers to the restoration of teeth using materials that are fabricated by indirect methods which are cemented into place. A crown is used to cap or completely cover a tooth.
Dental Crown in a Day!
At Jenson Dental, we provide patients with a variety of crown options. We can now do a crown in a day thanks to advanced technology from CEREC. Dental crowns are made from porcelain, ceramic, and metal. Some patients choose to come back later in the day for the crown to be completed and then cemented in place.
If you have a crown that needs additional work, we may need more time to complete the crown. We will discuss the time frame for crown completion when you are in our office.
Why Do I Need a Crown?
The reason for receiving a crown can vary based on the tooth. Some teeth are fragile due to problems with large fillings and root canals. Crowns are protective caps that are placed on the tooth to protect it from decay. Here are the most common reasons why crowns are used:
- To protect a tooth following a root canal
- To cover a broken or cracked tooth
- To strengthen a weak tooth that has a large filling
- To cover an implant
- To anchor teeth that are supporting a bridge
What is a CEREC Crown?
CEREC crowns are created in office. CEREC crowns come as a solid block of ceramic or resin material. The type of crown needed is made on site within an hour. We prefer using CEREC crowns because it allows patients to leave our office with their permanent crown instead of a temporary crown. The other positive element for patients is that they only need a single appointment for the complete crown seating instead of multiple visits.
CEREC crowns are designed using computer technology to take a picture of the tooth that will receive a crown. The software works with the picture and Dr. Jenson to design your new tooth on the screen. Dr. Jenson will review the color to make sure it matches up to the rest of your teeth. Our goal is to make sure the new crown matches properly and that it helps to create a uniformed smile.
